Learn About the Different Types of Tank Linings

Water, chemicals, and other liquids that are used in industrial settings are typically kept in large storage tanks. Since these tanks are subject to corrosion from the caustic materials they have to store, tank linings are absolutely essential. In fact, all tanks that are used to store human drinking water are required to have liners to stay in good condition, as are any tanks that store corrosive materials. Let’s take a look at some of the tank linings that are used and how they help prevent frequent water tank repairs.

EPDM Liners

EPDM – or ethylene propylene diene monomer – is a synthetic rubber that is often referred to as “black ethylene” due to its color. It can be used to store almost any material and is highly resistant to corrosion and abrasion. It won’t rot as it ages or become brittle, so it will make a great long-term investment for your storage needs.

Neoprene Liners

Like EPDM liners, neoprene liners don’t rot or become brittle as they age. They’re also highly resistant to abrasion, tears, and gouges. It’s ideal for storing water, oils, and solvents, but it isn’t as resistant to strong acids or bases.

Polyurethane Liners

Polyurethane is a black synthetic rubber with a smooth finish. Like many other synthetic rubbers, it doesn’t rot or become brittle, and it can resist abrasions and tears. It isn’t resistant to strong acids or bases, but it does last a long time when it is used to store water and most other materials

PVC Liners

PVC – or polyvinyl chloride – is similar to the other liners on this list. It’s also known as vinyl, and linings made from it will hold up to most solvents and other chemicals. It’s as long-lasting as other synthetic rubbers, but you’ll likely need to make tank lining repairs more frequently if you’re storing particularly strong acids.
