Tank Inspection and Lining Gets a Quicker with Sherwin Williams New Product

Exciting news has captured the attention of Bay Area coatings contractors and tank owners alike: Sherwin-Williams has rolled out a new tank lining that offers several advantages, including faster applications and speedy returns to service. Officially known as Nova-Plate 360 tank lining, this technology promises to also provide “unparalleled protection to the interior of steel tanks and vessels,” according to product information from Sherwin Williams.

Faster Applications

As explained in a press release put out by Sherwin-Williams, Nova-Plate 360 makes use of a single-leg application process. This makes applying it simpler, especially compared to linings that require plural-component spraying. The lining also boasts a colored Part B that allows applicators to make sure they achieve the “proper mix before spraying,” which can cut down on errors and rework.

Additionally, the coat’s fast curing time allows tanks to return to service within a 24-hour time period. Another plus is that Nova-Plate 360 has a high film build, eliminating the need for multiple coats in most cases. That alone cuts a step out of the application process. All of these features combine to mean that assets that need to remain operational as much as possible—like a commercial fire water tank—can do so. (Note that plural-component and multiple-coating setups are possible as well, if so desired.)

Tank Benefits

Nova-Plate 360 will smooth the tank inspection process. For example, its optional optically activated pigment technology allows for LED inspection that identifies small but critical problems in linings, including pinholes and holidays. (A holiday is a type of interruption in the tank lining that damages its performance.) Smoother inspections make inspectors more likely to find issues—no matter how small—and identify necessary courses of actions, such as tank leak repair.

Aside from its easy application and maintenance procedures, Nova-Plate 360 offers a high level of protection. For example, it can resist methanol at 77 degrees Fahrenheit and ethanol at 120 degrees. It also holds up in most situations that involve cathodic disbonding. According to Sherwin-Williams, the lining was developed with steel tanks, spools, pipelines, and vessels in mind. All in all, it promises to deliver a great mix of excellent performance and convenience.

FRP Concrete Strengthening – Strength and Corrosion Resistance

For the past 25 years or so, Fiber Reinforced Polymers (or fiber-reinforced plastics) have been gaining in usage in the U.S. for the purpose of adding considerable strength to structures made of concrete, wood, masonry, and steel. Since it was discovered that FRP concrete strengthening was at least eight times more effective than steel-reinforced structures, the process has surged into popularity in this country. In essence, high-strength fibers such as steel, glass, or carbon are combined with a polymer matrix, which protects the fibers and binds them together, thus creating a super-strong reinforcing substance. Choosing Materials for Fabrication of Tanks, Water Tank Linings and Coatings

Water storage is an integral part of many industries and requires careful consideration to minimize risks and adhere to government standards. So, it’s not hard to understand why tank fabrication is so important.

The way that you store your water, regardless of its unique properties, will have a direct impact on the quality of your operation. This is why we’ve compiled a list of some essential factors to consider before committing to a design or manufacturer. Read more »

commercial fire water tank leak repair

One prime advantage of above ground water storage tanks is that they can be easily inspected and maintained. Many tank owners aren’t proactive though, which can lead to thousands of dollars in damages when the tank does need repairs or replacement. Learn more about what causes tank damage and how to prevent problems. A commercial fire water tank liner is an investment in your tank. Read more »

water tank repair, tank linings, sandblasting bay area

A reliable, durable and long-lasting tank coating relies upon expert prep work. Whether your liquid storage tank linings are installed in the field after purchase, or needs a new lining prior to re-purposing the tank, careful preparation is key to protect your equipment investment. The old coating (and/or any initial corrosion) must be removed thoroughly and completely to Near White Cleanliness or White Metal Blast level, to provide a proper surface for the application of new tank linings. With proper interior and exterior tank coatings, plus timely water tank repair and maintenance from your experienced coatings contractor in the Bay Area, your storage tanks (and corrosion resistant tank linings) will provide many years of reliable service for your business. tank lining repair, tank lining

Fiber-reinforced composites for tank linings are gaining widespread popularity these days, as more and more people discover their inherent strength, resistance to corrosion, and tolerance of high temperatures. New composites are being developed which increase the already considerable beneficial properties offered by fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP), and similar composites. As a result, these materials are beginning to be used in a number of applications which were once dominated by metals and alloys, especially since the fiber-reinforced tank repair products tend to be considerably less expensive than metals are.

Benefits of FRP Tank Lining Repairs

There is a high demand globally for products which are extremely tough and able to withstand severe weather, as well as providing a great deal of strength. The same applications frequently call for materials which are highly resistant to corrosion, because normal weathering can cause corrosion, and because corrosive materials are being stored, for instance various types of chemicals tanks.

There are also many cases where products are called for which have a tremendous tolerance for high temperatures, because of conditions which they are exposed to. Fiber-reinforced products manage to provide all these characteristics at a very high level, and have already been shown to perform well in applications, such as concrete strengthening and tank liner repairs, where they’ve been used. Perhaps best of all, these highly desirable characteristics can be obtained in products which are far less expensive than the metal-based products which have been most often used, up to this point.

FRP Repairs to infrastructure, linings, and reinforcement

With considerable research and development leading to the creation of some ultra-strong, highly resistant composites such as composite/concrete, a number of bridges have been constructed in the states of Maine, Illinois, and New Jersey which have taken advantage of these new materials. Opportunities have arisen for the fabrication of pre-manufactured stay-in-place (SIP) forms which might formerly have been satisfied by concrete strengthening solutions. The rehabilitation of steel culverts in some areas has been accomplished by the usage of composite liners, which replace culverts degraded by rust, corrosion, and a general weakening of structures.

Another very strong market for fiber-reinforced materials is in the area of ducts, piping, and tanks which contain highly corrosive chemicals and other substances. Although this market has been dominated by metal-based products in the past, fiber-reinforced products are beginning to make inroads into the market, as its effectiveness and relatively cheaper cost becomes more widely recognized. This can be particularly useful in specific applications such as bleach transport, which is currently done largely via railway cars. A very viable alternative is emerging in which high-concentration bleach is shipped via FRP-lined cargo trucks which are safer for the environment, and cause less disruption in cities they pass through.

Given the fact that FRP-based products have already proven to provide superior performance, even under some very stressful conditions, and that they are cheaper to use than metal-based products, it seems apparent that the future for FRP-based products is rosy indeed. Further research and development will undoubtedly discover even more capable products, and as these are put to use, a powerful new alternative to metal-based products will gain greater acceptance.
